How to Tell If Your PS5 HDMI Port Is Damaged

No signal, a flickering picture or an HDMI cable that only works at certain angles can all point towards a damaged PlayStation 5 HDMI port. Here is how to recognise the common symptoms and determine when professional repair is needed.

The HDMI port carries the picture and sound from your PS5 to your television or monitor. If the socket or its internal pins become damaged, the console may still power on normally but fail to produce a usable display.

HDMI port damage is one of the most common physical faults we see on PlayStation 5 consoles. It can happen when the cable is pulled, forced into the socket incorrectly, knocked while connected, or left attached while the console is moved.

Common signs of PS5 HDMI port damage

Your HDMI port may be damaged if the console shows one or more of these symptoms:

  • The TV displays “No Signal”
  • The PS5 reaches a solid white light with no picture
  • The image flickers or cuts in and out
  • The HDMI cable feels loose inside the socket
  • The picture appears only when the cable is held at an angle
  • Pins inside the HDMI port look bent, broken or missing
  • The port looks pushed in or physically distorted
  • The fault began after the console or cable was knocked

Look inside the HDMI port carefully

With the PS5 fully switched off and disconnected from power, use a light to look into the HDMI socket. A healthy port should have a straight central section with a complete row of evenly positioned contacts.

Signs of physical damage can include bent contacts, missing pins, debris inside the socket, a cracked central section or a port that appears pushed backwards into the console. The metal outer casing should also sit evenly around the opening.

Do not insert tools into the HDMI socket

Avoid trying to straighten pins with tweezers, needles or screwdrivers. This can short the contacts, damage the circuit or turn a replaceable HDMI port fault into damaged motherboard pads and traces.

Six strong signs that the port may be damaged

01

No signal from the PS5

The console powers on, but the television cannot detect a signal from the selected HDMI input.

02

White light with no picture

The PS5 progresses to a steady white status light, suggesting it has started, but nothing appears on screen.

03

Intermittent or flickering display

The picture repeatedly drops out, displays coloured interference or flickers when the cable moves.

04

Cable works only at an angle

Holding the cable upwards, downwards or to one side temporarily restores the picture.

05

Loose HDMI connection

The plug moves excessively inside the port or does not sit as firmly as it should.

06

Visible internal damage

One or more contacts are bent or missing, or the central plastic section is cracked or displaced.

Safe checks to try before booking a repair

A no-display fault does not automatically prove that the PS5 HDMI socket is damaged. Before arranging a repair, you can safely rule out several external causes.

  1. Try another HDMI cable. Use a cable known to work with another console or device.
  2. Try another HDMI input. Move the cable to a different HDMI socket on the television and select the matching input.
  3. Test another display if possible. Connecting the PS5 to another television or monitor helps rule out a problem with the original screen.
  4. Connect directly to the television. Temporarily remove soundbars, HDMI switches, capture cards and receivers from the connection.
  5. Fully power-cycle the equipment. Switch off the PS5 and television, disconnect them from power briefly, reconnect them and test again.
What if another cable works?

If the PS5 works reliably with a replacement cable, the original cable was probably responsible. If several known-good cables fail or all feel loose inside the port, the console is more likely to need inspection.

No display is not always caused by the HDMI port

A physically damaged HDMI socket is a common reason for PS5 no-signal faults, but it is not the only possibility. A console can have an apparently undamaged port and still fail to produce a picture.

Other possible causes include:

  • A failed HDMI encoder or another display-circuit fault
  • Damaged filters or components surrounding the HDMI circuit
  • Lifted motherboard pads or broken traces beneath the port
  • Poor-quality or unsuccessful previous repair work
  • Liquid damage or corrosion on the motherboard
  • A power, software or startup fault preventing normal operation

If the port looks normal and the safe external checks make no difference, the PS5 may require proper board-level diagnosis rather than an automatic HDMI port replacement.

You can read more about these faults in our PS5 white light with no display guide .

What should you avoid doing?

Continuing to move or hold the cable in a particular position can make the damage worse. If connections beneath the port are already strained, repeated movement may lift pads or break traces on the motherboard.

Avoid:

  • Forcing the HDMI plug into a damaged or misaligned socket
  • Repeatedly moving the cable until the picture appears
  • Trying to bend internal pins back into position
  • Applying glue around a loose HDMI socket
  • Heating the port with a domestic heat gun
  • Opening the console without suitable tools and experience
Previous repair damage can increase the work required

PS5 HDMI replacement requires controlled heat, board protection and microsoldering equipment. Excessive heat or force can damage the motherboard, nearby components and the small connections beneath the socket.

How a professional PS5 HDMI repair is completed

Replacing the socket involves more than removing the visible port. The console must be disassembled, the motherboard removed and the HDMI area inspected for damage before a replacement socket is fitted.

1

Initial inspection

The HDMI port and surrounding motherboard area are examined for bent pins, physical damage and signs of previous repair work.

2

Console disassembly

The PS5 is carefully stripped down so the motherboard and HDMI connections can be accessed safely.

3

Damaged port removal

The faulty socket is removed using professional rework equipment while protecting the board and nearby components.

4

Replacement and board checks

A replacement HDMI socket is fitted and its connections are inspected. Additional damage is identified before further work is carried out.

5

Display testing

The console is reassembled and tested for stable picture output before being prepared for collection or return.

Most eligible repairs include a three-month warranty covering the repair carried out. Full terms are available on our repair warranty page.

Frequently asked questions

Is PS5 no signal always caused by a damaged HDMI port?

No. The HDMI socket is a common cause, particularly when it is visibly damaged or loose, but encoder faults, damaged filters, broken traces and other motherboard faults can also prevent display output.

Can a PS5 HDMI port be replaced if its pins are broken?

In many cases, yes. Bent, missing or pushed-in pins normally require the complete HDMI socket to be replaced. The motherboard connections also need to be inspected for damage.

Why does the HDMI cable work only when held at an angle?

This commonly indicates worn, bent or disconnected contacts inside the socket. Continuing to hold the cable at an angle can place more strain on the port and motherboard.

Can you inspect a PS5 previously repaired elsewhere?

Yes. Previous repair work can be inspected for damaged pads, missing components, broken traces, poor connections or faults elsewhere in the display circuit.

Do I need to send cables or controllers with my PS5?

Accessories are not normally required for an HDMI port repair. Send only the console unless CNLS Electronics has specifically asked you to include another item.

Can I send my PS5 from anywhere in the UK?

Yes. CNLS Electronics accepts securely packaged mail-in PS5 repairs from across the UK. Follow the packing instructions and include the identification information created with your booking.
