PS5 White Light but No Display: Causes and What to Check
Does your PlayStation 5 reach a solid white light but show no picture? Learn what the white light means, which safe checks you can perform and which HDMI or motherboard faults may require professional repair.
What does a white light on PS5 mean? A solid white light normally means that your PS5 has powered on and progressed beyond its initial blue-light startup sequence. If the light remains white but there is no picture or signal on the television, the problem is usually within the HDMI output path rather than the power system. Possible causes include a damaged HDMI port, encoder fault, damaged filters, lifted pads or broken motherboard traces.
A damaged HDMI socket is one of the most common causes, but it is not the only possibility. HDMI encoder faults, damaged filters, broken motherboard traces, unsuccessful previous repairs and external cable or television problems can all produce similar symptoms.
What does a PS5 white light with no display mean?
The console appears to start normally, but no usable HDMI picture reaches the television or monitor. Common symptoms include:
- The PS5 changes from blue to solid white
- The television continues to display “No Signal”
- The screen remains black after startup
- The picture appears and then disappears
- The display flickers or shows interference
- Safe Mode also produces no picture
- Several HDMI cables give the same result
- The PS5 has previously suffered HDMI damage
What does the solid white light mean?
When a PS5 is first switched on, its status light normally flashes blue before changing to white. A steady white light generally indicates that the console is powered on and has completed the main part of its startup sequence.
This makes a white-light no-display fault different from a console that powers off immediately, remains stuck on a flashing blue light or shows no power at all. It suggests that the console is running, but its picture is not reaching the screen correctly.
It tells us that the console has powered on, but it does not confirm whether the problem is the HDMI socket, encoder, display circuit, television, cable or another component. Further checks are needed before the correct repair can be identified.
Safe checks to try first
Before assuming that your PS5 requires repair, rule out the external parts of the HDMI connection. These checks do not require you to open the console.
Check the selected television input
Confirm that the television is displaying the same HDMI input into which the PS5 cable is connected.
Try another HDMI cable
Test with a cable known to work correctly with another console, television box or compatible device.
Use another HDMI input
Connect the cable to a different HDMI socket on the television and select that input using the television remote.
Connect the PS5 directly
Temporarily remove soundbars, HDMI switches, capture cards, receivers and other devices from the connection.
Test another television or monitor
If possible, connect the console to a different display. This helps determine whether the original television is responsible.
Power-cycle the equipment
Switch off the console and television, disconnect both briefly, then reconnect them and test the HDMI connection again.
If the picture appears only when the cable is pushed upwards, downwards or sideways, stop moving it. This strongly suggests a physical connection problem, and continued pressure may damage the HDMI port or motherboard connections further.
Can you test the PS5 in Safe Mode?
Safe Mode starts the PS5 with a limited set of functions and may help with certain resolution or software-related display problems. To attempt it, switch the PS5 off completely and then press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep, which normally occurs several seconds after the first.
Connect a controller using a USB cable and press the PS button. If Safe Mode appears, you may be able to try options such as changing the video output or restarting the console.
If you cannot see Safe Mode after trying known-good cables and another display, a physical HDMI or motherboard fault becomes more likely. Do not select Safe Mode options blindly when you cannot see the menu.
Common causes of a PS5 white light with no display
If cables, television inputs and another screen make no difference, the console itself may need inspection. The following are among the most common internal causes.
Damaged HDMI port
Bent pins, a cracked centre section or broken connections beneath the socket can prevent the HDMI signal from leaving the console.
HDMI encoder fault
A failed encoder or related display-circuit component can cause no signal even when the external HDMI socket appears undamaged.
Damaged HDMI filters
Small components between the port and display circuitry can become damaged or electrically faulty, interrupting the signal.
Broken pads or traces
Physical impact or poor previous repair work can lift solder pads or break the tiny motherboard traces connected to the socket.
Previous repair damage
Missing components, solder bridges, incomplete connections or excessive heat damage can remain after an unsuccessful repair.
Liquid or corrosion damage
Liquid contamination and corrosion around the HDMI or motherboard circuitry can interrupt power or signal connections.
Could the HDMI port be damaged?
A damaged HDMI port is especially likely if the fault began after the console was moved, dropped or knocked while the HDMI cable was still connected. Damage can also occur if the plug was forced into the socket at the wrong angle.
With the console switched off and disconnected from power, use a light to inspect the socket. Look for bent or missing contacts, a cracked central section, a distorted metal surround or a port that appears pushed into the console.
Other strong signs include a cable that feels unusually loose, a picture that cuts out when the plug moves or a display that works only while the cable is held in a particular position.
Our separate guide explains how to tell if your PS5 HDMI port is damaged and which warning signs to look for.
Needles, tweezers and screwdrivers can short contacts or damage the internal pins. Attempting to bend the contacts back can also worsen damage beneath the socket.
What if the HDMI port looks normal?
An undamaged-looking socket does not rule out a console fault. The connections beneath the port cannot be fully assessed from outside, and components elsewhere in the display circuit may have failed.
If the socket looks straight, the cable fits securely and all external checks fail, the console may have an HDMI encoder fault, damaged filters, a broken circuit connection or another board-level problem.
Proper diagnosis may involve visual inspection under magnification, electrical measurements and testing around the HDMI circuit. Replacing the socket without confirming the fault may not restore the picture if the port was not the actual cause.
What do the symptoms suggest?
| Symptom | Possible explanation |
|---|---|
| Cable works only at an angle | Physical HDMI port damage or failed connections beneath the socket are particularly likely. |
| Visible bent or missing pins | The HDMI socket is physically damaged and will normally require replacement. |
| Port looks normal but there is no signal | The fault could be beneath the port or elsewhere in the HDMI encoder and display circuitry. |
| One cable fails but another works | The original cable may be faulty rather than the console. |
| PS5 works on another television | The original television, input, settings or connected equipment may be causing the problem. |
| Picture flickers or shows interference | A weak physical connection, damaged port, cable problem or HDMI circuit fault may be interrupting the signal. |
These symptoms can help narrow down the cause, but they do not replace physical and electrical diagnosis. More than one fault can also be present, particularly after impact or an unsuccessful repair attempt.
What should you avoid doing?
A no-display fault can become more complicated if the HDMI socket or motherboard is damaged further during home repair attempts.
Avoid:
- Forcing an HDMI cable into a damaged or distorted socket
- Holding the cable at an angle to keep the picture working
- Trying to straighten HDMI pins with metal tools
- Applying glue around a loose HDMI connection
- Heating the motherboard with a domestic heat gun
- Replacing the HDMI port without suitable rework equipment
- Selecting Safe Mode options blindly without a visible menu
- Repeatedly switching the console on if liquid damage is suspected
Excessive heat or force can lift solder pads, dislodge nearby components or damage internal board layers. This can turn a repairable HDMI fault into a much more complicated motherboard repair.
How is a white-light no-display fault diagnosed?
Diagnosis begins by confirming the reported fault using known-good cables and test equipment. The HDMI socket and surrounding area can then be inspected for physical damage and evidence of previous repair work.
If the port is visibly damaged, the motherboard connections beneath it must also be checked. If the socket appears intact, further testing may be required around the HDMI filters, encoder and related circuitry.
Confirm the no-display fault
The console is tested with known-good HDMI equipment to rule out the original television or cable.
Inspect the HDMI socket
The port is examined for bent pins, distortion, looseness and evidence of physical impact.
Inspect the motherboard
The surrounding area is checked for damaged components, broken connections, corrosion or poor previous repair work.
Test the HDMI circuitry
Relevant filters, power supplies and signal-path components are assessed where the fault requires deeper diagnosis.
Complete the correct repair
The faulty port or component is repaired or replaced according to the findings rather than relying on guesswork.
When should you book a professional repair?
Professional inspection is recommended when several known-good cables and displays produce no picture, the PS5 also shows nothing in Safe Mode or the HDMI port is visibly damaged.
You should also stop testing and arrange repair if:
- The cable feels loose inside the HDMI socket
- The picture appears only when pressure is applied to the cable
- The fault began after the console or cable was knocked
- Contacts inside the HDMI port appear bent or missing
- The PS5 has already had an unsuccessful HDMI repair
- There are signs of liquid contamination or corrosion
- The display flickers, cuts out or shows visual interference

Frequently asked questions
Does a solid white light mean my PS5 is working?
A steady white light normally indicates that the console has powered on, but it does not prove that every circuit is working. The PS5 can still have an HDMI port, encoder or motherboard fault that prevents display output.
Is a PS5 white light with no display always an HDMI port fault?
No. A damaged HDMI socket is common, but faulty cables, television problems, damaged filters, encoder faults, broken traces and previous repair damage can produce similar symptoms.
Why does my PS5 have a white light but the TV says no signal?
The console may be running without successfully sending a usable HDMI signal. First test another cable, HDMI input and display. If these make no difference, the console may need inspection.
Can Safe Mode fix a PS5 no-display problem?
Safe Mode may help when the fault is caused by an incompatible video setting or certain software problems. It cannot repair a physically damaged HDMI port or failed motherboard component.
Can the HDMI port be faulty even if it looks normal?
Yes. Connections beneath the port may be damaged even when the socket looks normal from outside. The fault may also be in the HDMI encoder, filters or another part of the display circuit.
Can a PS5 with a previous failed repair still be repaired?
Often, yes, although it depends on the extent of the damage. Lifted pads, broken traces, missing components and heat damage may require additional board-level work.
Do I need to send my cables and controller?
Accessories are not normally required for an HDMI or no-display repair. Send only the console unless CNLS Electronics has asked you to include a specific cable or accessory.
Can I send my PS5 to you from anywhere in the UK?
Yes. CNLS Electronics accepts securely packaged PS5 repairs from customers across the UK through our mail-in repair service.
